In 1961, a group of fourteen consecrated Christians: Bro. and Sis. Phil Jarmon, Bro. & Sis. Elijah Rivers, Bro. & Sis. Eddie Smith, Bro. & Sis. L.K. Shepherd, as well as Bro. & Sis. Jack Harris, led by Rev. & Mrs. W.J. Gaskin met in the home of Bro. & Sis. Ollie Edwards to set in motion their dreams and visions of what they believed were the foundations of both fellowship and service in the body of Christ.
- During their first year, a building was purchased at 8806 Southview in Houston, Texas. Bro. Phil Jarmon suggested the unified body be recognized by the name of Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church, which was unanimously received.
- After the resignation of Rev. Gaskin, Rev. M.J. Jones was instated as pastor. During his administration property at 4137 Maggie Street was acquired in 1964. In April 1978, major remodeling was done to the building, under Rev. A.E. Campbell’s leadership.
- Over the years Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of former pastors, Rev. Byrd Lacey, Rev. J.L. Campbell, Rev. M.P. Bland, Rev. A.E. Campbell and Rev. Lloyd Scott held steady growth.
- In September 1989, following the recruitment for a leader/pastor, Rev. Mose A. Jones took charge of the pulpit as the new Pastor of Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
- On Monday, November 29, 1993, Pastor Jones brought the congregation to view our present edifice (9600 Scott Street). The property cost more than $140,000, but we believed by faith the victory was ours. Papers were signed on December 30, 1993 and on Sunday, January 16, 1994, Pastor Jones led us into our sanctuary with a remaining mortgage of only $57,200.
- The church mortgage was paid off in December 2008 and we held our Mortgage Burning Ceremony on March 22, 2009, with the late, Rev. Charles Wheat (St. Luke MBC – Galveston, TX) as our 11:00 a.m. speaker.
- As the longest serving Pastor, Rev. Mose A. Jones has achieved many great milestones in his 31 years of faithful leadership. As he continues to lead the church, as Christ leads him, we anticipate with hope that greater is to come.
